General Update Info for Hard-Core ClakeKlake Fans
posted by clake at 3:07 PM (0) comments

In case you're wondering what we've been up to, here's just a bit of it:
  • The last time Klake and I visited my parents and they got to see their adorable grandson, Plake, they sent me home with several kohlrabies grown in their own garden. According to the fallible yet ubiquitous Wikipeida, the name means literally "cabbageturnip" in German, the language of my poor, farming ancestors. This name describes the vegetable better than anything further I could write about it. It tastes like a cabbage, is shaped like a turnip, and is terrible for your breath. Yesterday, I cut these kohlrabies up and put them in a plastic bag to eat at work today, and now as I crunch them I hope that no one tries to speak with me too closely for at least an hour or so.
  • We attended one wedding a couple of weekends ago, and have another one on the way this weekend. Love is in the air, ladies and gentlemen.
  • A week before the previous wedding, I enjoyed a bachelor party/canoe trip with several other friends of the groom. I will only say that it was a fun time, but it also resulted in new rules for myself regarding drinking. I write no further on the subject, hoping any details will be lost to history. Actually, one other detail that is mentionable is that I am told that I frequently slurred to everyone who would listen about how proud I am of my son. It's true: I am.
  • I'm getting back into reading fiction. I'm currently working on The Satanic Verses, which is neither satanic nor written in verse. From all the news coverage of the book when I was a kid, I kind of thought it was a devotional text for Satan worshippers. That's the only way I could understand it justifying the kind of controversy that surrounded it. Much later, I learned that it was a novel, and realized that not all controversy is justified. It is a novel story book about fictional characters, people! Coming up next, I'm planning to read a bit of Terry Pratchett. I listened to Small Gods as an audiobook when I used to have a long commute, and was impressed and amused. I think there's going to be a parade of sci-fi/fantasy across my reading list for a while, with occasional breaks for non-fiction. Once again, the list of current and recent reading will be at the bottom of this page, for the curious. I am open to your suggestions.
  • Nerdy-ass Doctor Who update: On the classic series front, I'm halfway through Nightmare of Eden and liking it so far. The Doctor uncovers some drug-smuggling shenanigans, two ships get stuck together after a hyperspace collision, and a guy in a big, rubbery monster costume is killing people. Regarding our progress through the new series, we recently saw Tooth and Claw, which was a bit scary for Klake but nonetheless enjoyable. Up next is School Reunion, which includes a guest appearance by that old, reliable Doctor Who help-meet, K-9! I'm pretty psyched about that.

Here's hoping all the best for you on this Friday night.

Butterfly in the Skyyyyyy
posted by clake at 2:11 PM (0) comments

For a while, our previous blog had (among about a thousand other things in the sidebar) a list that included the book I was currently reading, as well as several previous books. This disappeared when we went to the simpler format. Now, if you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you'll see that I've brought this feature back using a feed from my del.icio.us account. This makes such a thing a lot easier to update without mucking about in the template. I hope that this provides another helpful bit of information to my friends, without marring the simplicity of the site.

By all means, if you see a book you've read on this list, feel free to drop me a line to discuss it. Suggestions are welcome, as well. The links will go to the wikipedia entries for the listed books. If I mention a certain book in the blog, I'll change the link to take you to the blog post, with a parenthetical note indicating it has been "blogged" or something of that nature.

I'm currently starting The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie. Are you brave enough to read the DaVinci Code of the Islamic world? Are you tough enough to open a book that brought down a fatwah upon a guy's head? Actually, my impression so far is that all the controversey over the book is a big overreaction. Up to this point, the book seems to be a magical-realist farce about an Indian film star.

Not that I would ever imply that religious fundamentalists would overreact to something.

Baby Plake update
posted by klake at 9:41 PM (2) comments

What has Baby Plake been up to lately? Well in addition to tons of eating, sleeping, and pooping he has:

Chewed on his father,

Sat in his highchair like a big boy,

Taken some baths with his rubber duckie,

Practiced his vowels,

And stopped smiling as soon as his mom got out the camera.

Sour Milk
posted by clake at 1:30 PM (3) comments

I thought it should be noted for posterity that I bought a small carton of milk for lunch today that turned out to have been improperly sealed, resulting in a spoiled beverage. I discovered that the reason it's called "sour milk" is that it is, in fact, very sour in taste. There was no doubt as to the milk's freshness. It was definately rancid tasting. I had to run to the nearest garbage can and spew the vile liquid into the trash, then I went back to the vendor from which I purchased it and got myself a new carton, which I carefully inspected. My lunch companions felt, rightfully, that the whole situation was quite amusing.

Three Shots, and Some Goo
posted by clake at 9:10 PM (0) comments

Today we took Plake to the pediatrician (will I ever be able to say or write that word without first thinking 'vet'?) to get his 2-month exam and vaccinations. He despised the examination and hated the shots terribly, screaming throughout their duration. He also didn't much like the weird goo that was the oral rotavirus inoculation. However, thought of in terms of total time spend being happy vs. being utterly horrified, the visit was an overall good time. Getting weighed was no problem for him, and during the less invasive exam by a nurse he was in good spirits. While waiting for the doctor, he got to lie on an exam table and have daddy play with this fingers and toes, much to his baby-delight.

Here are some Baby Plake stats, for those keeping track:

Height: 23"
Weight: 12 lbs. 9 oz.
Head circumference: 15.35"
Special power: Fireball
Zodiac sign: A frog riding a bicycle
Hobbies: Farting in the bath

'N Ice Day
posted by clake at 4:02 PM (0) comments

Klake found out how to make cold-brewed iced coffee from this recipe published in the NY Times. Cold-brewing is quite easy and can be done with a mason jar, a strainer, and a coffee filter. (It tells you to run the brewed coffee through a filter twice, but I find that once through a mesh strainer and then once through a filter works just fine.) The resulting brew is so wonderfully tasty, enjoyable, and smooth! I like mine with just a splash of skim milk and no further sweetening. This is what I'm going to be drinking in the morning from now until mid-autumn's crisp air and painted foliage turn a gentleman's a.m. thoughts toward toastier tipples.

Here's a link to the accompanying article as well.

He's got crabs!
posted by clake at 2:52 PM (0) comments

According to this Wired news brief, what is now known as the Crab Nebula originated in a supernova that was first observed in the Earth year 1054 C.E.

Ideas like that just blow me away. Anything that provides a hint of how vast and awesome the cosmos is, I eat it up like bread and butter. The ideal toy for me would be a little box with a crank on the side, which you turn until a little puppet scientist pops out and in a British accent shouts "The Universe!"
