People alive today will experience old age in a way totally unlike their ancestors, with longer, healthier lives. [MAIN PAGE] Energy Curtailment posted by clake at 1:14 PM (0) comments I should mention that this past weekend saw yet another new installment of Randy the Cat. Also, you can easily keep up with the adventures of Randy with a handy, new RSS feed. Plug it into whatever sort of thing your normally plug RSS feeds into and it immediately goes to work neutralizing odor in every room. Today for lunch, I escaped the tyranny of over-air-conditioning to sit outside on an old, weathered limestone bench in Squirrel Hollow and eat my lunch while reading an article about Syd Barrett and drinking a hot cup of coffee. When I left, the thermostat in my area was set to seventy degrees. I turned it up to 75. There is an energy curtailment in effect, you guys! It makes me ridiculously sad to think about how my sweetie will die. Note from Clake: This is a really sad video and may in fact kill you. Consider yourself warned. That Death Cab guy is a really unhappy bastard. It isn't too long, but it makes you think about how easy it is to for anyone to take a tiny piece of evidence and use it to support an argument. My favorite is the Edy's Slow Churned French Silk. Clake is currently enjoying the chocolate fudge chunk. Three cheers for genetic engineering and creative ways to lower fat content! [MAIN PAGE] Tuesday, July 25, 2006 Humans as self-domesticated apes posted by klake at 3:52 PM (0) comments I read a freakishly large amount of news, and I figured I should be sharing one great article each day to my blogfriends. Today's article: Nice rats, nasty rats: Maybe it is in the genes An article about a Russian study breeding rats, foxes, etc. for tameness and viciousness to compare the genetic makeup. The goal is to see if common traits of domesticated animals, such as floppy ears, were selected inadvertently by Neolithic humans trying to breed pleasant animals. Also mentioned: a researcher who believes that humans have domesticated themselves using similar techniques. [MAIN PAGE] They Sure Like Badgers posted by clake at 2:20 PM (0) comments Hello, everyone! It's nice to be back. Klake and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to beautiful Madison, Wisconsin. The zoo was excellent, with numerous fascinating and beautiful creatures to behold. Did you know that the happiest animal in any zoo is always an otter of some sort? Just look at them! If you spend five minutes watching any otter while it is awake, you will definately walk away with the impression that this particular animal has a lot of seratonin all up in his little brain. The otter in question in this case was a North American river otter. Did you know that Wisconsin is yet another state where some legislators are wasting time and taxpayer money trying to pass a gay-hatin' constitutional amendment? Walking among the happy crowds, friendly vendors, and pretty music of the weekly farmers market surrounding the Wisconsin state capital, such sinister doings just don't seem possible. When I arrived home Sunday evening, I found that my ukulele was waiting for me on my front doorstep in a trapezoidal box proportioned very much like the instrument it contained. Hooray! It's a pretty cool uke, with a dark, wood finish and guitar-style tuners. It's likely to be a busy week of cleaning the house and preparing to host RAGBRAI's "Team Sledgehammer" on Friday night, though, so I'll be lucky if I even get the thing tuned before the weekend. No matter, though: I'll get a chance to play around with it soon enough. Time means little to the friendly ukulele. [MAIN PAGE] Wednesday, July 19, 2006 Stay In Focus posted by clake at 11:34 AM (0) comments As I mentioned earlier, I have an eBay-ed ukulele on the way. Also, today is my last day of work for the week before I start a brief but lovely vacation to beautiful Madison, Wisconsin. Needless to say, it has been very difficult to concentrate. I have a ukulele on the way. It is being shipped from Alberta, Canada. It's plinky power will change my life. [MAIN PAGE] Tuesday, July 11, 2006 Naming The Band posted by clake at 2:13 PM (1) comments Now's the time on our blog wherein I name your musical bands, because you're too busy to come up with a cool name - what with the practicing of music and the replacing of guitar strings and such. Below are several new candidates I think you'll like the sound of:
[MAIN PAGE] Saturday, July 08, 2006 Alas, Poor Rosencrantz posted by clake at 9:54 AM (0) comments This week's Randy the Cat comic features two a-holes in tights. High-fives and poisoned swords all around. To get you up to speed on the details of my life, I can start by mentioning that tomorrow I'll be going on what I fully expect to be a jaunty, enjoyable canoe trip roundabout Monticello, IA. I've never been in a canoe before - what fun! Today's main event will be a visit to several second-hand and antique stores searching for a hanging mirror. Also, I'm reading another Agatha Christie mystery featuring that mustachioed, Belgian detective, Poirot. I wish to go on record stating that I believe the murder was committed by Miss Rosamond Darnley. You heard me. [MAIN PAGE] Saturday, July 01, 2006 Symptoms posted by clake at 8:31 AM (0) comments This week, Randy the Cat introduces the House, M.D. drinking game. Don't like booze? Then play with coffee and vicodin instead! In coincidentally related news, Klake and I watched the movie Tape last night. It stars Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard (Dr. Wilson from House, M.D.), and Uma Thurman and is directed by Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, A Scanner Darkly). The entire movie takes place in a motel room, where the characters talk and talk and talk. This sounds like it would be horrid to watch, but the characters are interesting, the dialogue is realistic, and the dramatic tension constantly builds as more information from the characters' past comes to light. This film is rated RBBPFSUM for "Recommended, But Be Prepared For Some Uncomfortable Moments."
