When boys hit puberty they have physiological changes to the larynx that cause deepening of the voice. The larynx gets bigger, stronger and longer, and until the brain accommodates for the physical changes the voice can crack and make unpredictable sounds.

While listening to a BBC radio show today I learned that female voices change also. The larynx enlarges, and until the brain compensates by accommodating the change with different epiglottis movements the voice sounds “breathy”. That is why some females in their teens and early twenties have a sexy, breathy sort of voice.

When I was in school I didn’t speak in class much because I was shy. When I did contribute in class discussions I was very nervous. One day in English class the teacher asked a question and no one would answer. I planned exactly what I would say, put up my hand, and answered the question. Immediately after I spoke the teacher talked about a girl she knew who had a high, breathy voice and no one took her seriously until she started talking like a normal person. I could have died. In front of all of my classmates she told me that I sounded ridiculous. It wasn’t until my junior year of college before I was able to raise my hand and speak in class without breaking into a sweat. For a decade now I have thought that I sounded stupid when I spoke. But now I know that it wasn’t my fault, it was my epiglottis adjusting to changes in my larynx. So there you go, Miss D. Not my fault.

English Candy Review: Nestlé Lion Bar
posted by clake at 10:37 AM (0) comments

The Lion bar came as part of our recent English Tea Store order, and is another strong competitor. At its center, the Lion bar contains a thick wafer, like that in a Kit Kat. This wafer is filled with tasty caramel, coated with a Rice-Crispies-like cereal and then covered in milk chocolate. It tastes about as you would expect from the description, by which I mean fantastic. There's a sort of rich undertone to the whole experience that I can't adequately describe: It's rather like coffee, or perhaps it is better to describe it as "toasty". I'm not even sure whether to attribute this element of the flavor to the caramel or to the other ingredients, but the overall effect is to give the bar a complexity that I like very much. I honestly wonder why the Lion hasn't made it into the American market, though I suppose our own candy shelves are rather saturated with a variety of colorful wrappers and crazy names as it is.

English Candy Review: Mars Delight
posted by clake at 10:33 AM (0) comments

The Mars Delight bar came to us as part of the Mars & Friends Mega Selection Box. Klake and I very much enjoyed the delight. At the center of the bar is a wafer, but instead of a stratified wafer as you might find in a Kit Kat or similar confection, the Delight includes a rippled wafer. The provides a fascinating texture. Surround this with chocolate and caramel cream and dip it in the sort of creamy milk chocolate British candy bars are famous for, and you have an excellent candy indeed!

From the Nile River Delta to the Sceptered Isle
posted by clake at 8:40 PM (1) comments

I recently received another free shipping coupon code (mar09) from the English Tea Store, and decided that my current tea selection needed a pleasant, herbal variety for those afternoons when I wish to keep the good tradition of afternoon tea, but don't wish to include caffeine on the menu. Having selected some Egyptian chamomile that I think I'll enjoy immensely, I set to choosing a variety of British chocolate bars, with the assistance of my charming help-mate: the darling Klake.
Klake is the one who discovered the "Mars & Friends" assortment in the clearance section. She also took the initiative to add some genuine, English marmalade to our lives. I hope this is as much fun as our previous adventure with various packets of flavored crisps.
