Painted Bedroom
posted by clake at 12:40 PM (3) comments

Klake and I painted our master bedroom this weekend. Here I present the finished product, in "Sail Blue." Also note the stylish, bamboo headboard solution above the bed, which is something we came up with ourselves.

Bulleit
posted by clake at 10:16 AM (0) comments

I just submitted the following to the Bulleit Bourbon Outdoor Adventure essay contest:
My ideal outdoor adventure would be a week of camping in the beautiful but unforgiving deserts of New Mexico. My friends and I would explore the terrain of the region by day and at night we would look at the stars, contemplate the universe, and search for unidentified flying objects.
It is hard to write an essay that is under fifty words in length.

Alfalfa Train

It was a productive weekend, I'm happy to say. I finished a short story I started about a week-and-a-half ago. Anyone who wants to take a look and offer criticism is welcome to email me and request a copy. In fact, I'll go so far as to say I'd really like some good, solid criticism from anyone who will offer it. So far, only Klake has read it. She likes it quite a bit, though that may be equivalent to "My mom thinks I'm cool."

Klake and I bought bicycles yesterday. We had owned helmets for at least a week before finally taking the plunge and plunking down the money for bikes at the Target store. They're "cruiser" style, 7-speed, with those handlebars that bend backward. Not the sort of thing you'd take on RAGBRAI, perhaps, but great for getting around. Already, though, I find that my shifting mechanism needs a bit of adjustment. On a recent ride my chain slipped off twice. Maybe the thing just needs to be better lubricated. Any advice from avid cyclers out there?

Klake bought flowers and planted them in pots on either side of the garage door. They're marigolds in various shades of yellow and orange.

Friday evening, while the sun was still well above the horizon, Klake and I walked to a nearby empty lot and tossed around a foam glider her parents (the Easterbunny) had given us. What fun! A word of caution, though, those things'll break on you real easy. Though, even with the wings gone you can still get some distance.

That is about all I have for this update. Remember that if you want to have a look at my short, fictional, prose thing, you can email me at (MY).(NAME)(at)(GEEEE-mail)(daht)(what??).

Cheers!
Clake

"I'm in pieces, bits and pieces"
posted by clake at 2:39 PM (0) comments

It's good exercise to sit down a pound out a ton of little chunks that could someday become part of a story.
"Forget you're an expert for a minute," Ronald said, "What do you think happened?" After a pause, Aaron looked off to the side, staring at nothing in particular, "I think Andrew is still with us. And I think this is a clue." He held up the compass, its needle stubbornly pointing southeast.

Damn, I don't know what's going on in this story, but I want to write it just so I can read it.

"Challenge the mighty titan and his troubadours"
posted by clake at 4:39 PM (0) comments

The title for this post comes from the Queen song "The Seven Seas of Rhye." It is a brilliant rock song. Listen to this song enough, and you will be able to slay a dragon by smashing a guitar over its head.

I know it's been at least a couple of weeks since there's been a new Randy the Cat comic strip. I'm going through a period where I'm attempting to redirect most of my creative energy to other endeavours. I can no longer merely dabble at life. One's personal timeline is too short to not be doing something awesome with it.

But Randy is not entirely gone, my friends. You will see more of him in time.

Hey, let's hear it for five more minutes before the weekend begins, folks. Let's get out there and make the WEEK END!

Rock My Weekend
posted by clake at 5:00 PM (0) comments

Hello, everybody. I guess I haven't posted to this page since before I went to that Battle of the Bands. The Surf Report rocked pretty hard, maybe harder than a mortal man should rock in a small bar on the south side of Dubuque, IA. All the jumping around and dancing and generally going crazy with sheer rock energy made my entire body completely stiff for an entire weekend. I have been informed that The Surf Report was not the winner of the night, but I truly believe they deserved it. There are dark machinations behind all that we believe we see.

I also volunteered with Klake at the reopening of the Old Capitol Museum in Iowa City. For one thing, I learned that when Iowa became a state, federal law required that slave states be admitted to the union along with another, slightly-less-bigoted state. On behalf of Iowa, I'd like to say we're really sorry about Texas.

It's time I stopped procrastinating work and went home to procrastinate an entirely different set of mind-blowingly awesome stuff. If half of the things in my mind ever got done, they would build a theme park in my honor.

Carnuba Wax America
posted by clake at 8:55 PM (0) comments

This Friday, Klake and I plan to see The Surf Report play at the Battle of the Bands (Rock Fight) at Easy Street in Dubuque, IA. I am pretty sure that none of these guys are surfers, but Jay is a flight instructor. When you think about it, that's surfing the air. Stone cold awesome. Check them out Friday if you live in the Dubuque area or have any means at your disposal to drive, fly, swim, etc. to Dubuque to support some of the hardest working rockers in the atmosphere.
