Random Musing on Phil Collins

Being on the younger end of the Generation X spectrum, I feel I'm expected to have a strong dislike for Phil Collins, and dismiss his music with a scathing sarcasm. But if you think about it you notice that his love songs sometimes have lyrical content that's unusually mature and complicated for popular music. The phrase "We've had our problems, but I'm on your side." popped into my head just now. This is the kind of think an adult in a long-term relationship wants to hear. "I love you" is great, but what will really put us at ease about a complicated relationship that's had some rough times is "I'm on your side."
