I just saw this on YouTube and I don't know what to say except it may be one of the most unpredictably beloved things I have found there:

Do Not Give Away the Incredible Non-Ending...
posted by clake at 6:38 PM (0) comments

I saw Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest this past weekend, and felt that it deserved a review, if only because it's such a high-profile movie a lot of people could end up accidentally, tragically seeing it if they aren't duly warned. Being a "visual thinker", I decided that the bulk of my review should be a photo collage. Click to enlarge:

At least, that's the general feeling you start to get when you're a little less than halfway through the picture. For the rest of the movie, your attitude toward this film and its characters steadily deteriorates.

I could go into so much detail about the various ways in which this movie blows, but all I really have to say is that it is three-hours long, and manages to make a gorgeously-rendered, computer generated tentacle monster attacking a sailing ship seem absolutely, vigorously dull. Dull, dull, dull. Even when you are swordfighting on top of a freely rolling water wheel you are still as dull as shit, movie!

Avast.

Hey man, sorry if this week's Randy the Cat installment isn't very Randy-the-Cat-heavy or comic-strippish.

Twenty-Seven Weeks
posted by clake at 7:36 PM (0) comments

Klake is in her twenty-seventh week of pregnancy now. Her belly is huge, and she's a little bit weirded out that it has three months to get bigger. She has two pairs of maternity pants that are now the only ones she fits into. Every doctor's appointment has been uneventful and positive - She's young and healthy and on schedule to deliver a perfect baby. Rock on!

I can remember a time when the fetus' little kicks were almost impossible to feel. Now he often jumps around, headbanging and pumping his fist like that a hyperactive teen at a local rock concert. Klake likes to call this spurts of activity "playing 'bag full of weasels'". Last night, Klake asked me to feel her belly in a specific spot where she swore she could feel a foot poking against her. It did indeed feel like a bony human appendage pushing out against her uterus. Weird stuff, people.

I find myself feeling two seperate ways toward being a father. Part of me likes the remaining three months that stand between me and that responsibility, and other part of me just looks forward to getting the kid out of my wife so she can start to recover from his parasitic effect. She gets tired often, she gets emotional, she aches - I don't like seeing someone I love feel like that. She's particular about her body, and I can see how she dislikes the idea of growing bigger. I do my best to reassure her that she's beautiful, which she is. She's so healthy and full of potential - not to mention that "glow" of pregnancy.

It's three more months before the real responsibility of being a father. I hope to fulfill them well. Klake and I are happy with our decision to become parents. Though we also remain supportive of those who prefer never to have kids. We were these people for a long time and I still feel it is a legitimate way to live a full life, though I have now chosen a different path. Some people - very small-minded individuals - feel that it is selfish to not have children. I think you should also consider the opposite opinion: That procreation is a selfish act. After all, the world does not need more people. It's pretty full as it is. Yet you feel the need to spew out your own progeny into this world of limited resources as though this is some great benefit to mankind.

Not that I'm backsliding on my decision. I'm just being provacative. It's necessary sometimes.

An episode of the new Battlestar Galactica shows Commander Adama calling off a grim assassination attempt on a ruthless superior officer. His mind was changed after mulling over a conversation with a cylon - a race of robotic replicants at war with humanity - about whether the small number of remaining humans deserved to survive. The idea being that it isn't enough just to stay alive, the human race has to deserve its survival. I hope I can demonstrate this in some way to my son. I want to set an example of living a good life and having the world be a better place because I'm in it.

I see from what I've written above that though my life is going to change profoundly, a lot about me is going to remain the same. Certain ideals will remain. And my open-mindedness and constant questioning of the status quo are traits that should stick with me on my journey. Also, the paragraph above tells you that I'm not anywhere close to discontinuing my nerdiness. Nuh-uh.

This week, Randy the Cat presents a special animated adventure short! I am certain that all fans of Randy the Cat will enjoy this unique "motion picture".

Also available on YouTube, if you prefer. For those who are curious, the background music is from a wax cylinder recording of "The Black and White Rag".

"Who's gonna saaaave meeeee?"
posted by clake at 8:52 AM (0) comments

I'm listening to Midnight Oil on the old Radio Nigel. I haven't heard the guy from Midnight Oil's weird, modern-rock, vibratto voice in a while. It's a nice change of pace. It's the middle of winter in Iowa - I take my little moments of enjoyment where I can get them.

"In the end the rain comes do-o-own!..."

A local-option sales tax passed in my county yesterday, despite my inability to get my lazy ass to a polling station and do my duty as a citizen. Sorry about that. Glad to hear it passed anyway, though. Good to know that my son will be adequately educated even though I couldn't be bothered to complete an arrow with a pencil. I'll vote on the next thing, guys.

I've finally gotten around to reading another book in the Nerd Canon of Texts: Frank Herbert's Dune. I'm maybe a third of the way through, but since I'm so bad at actually getting a review posted here after reading a book, I figure I should put up my review while I'm thinking of it:
It's Good -- Clake
Yes, I am indeed liking this novel very much. There is a lot of detail about the social/political/scientific facts of life on the planet Arrakis for a kind of nerdy guy to get excited about. I believe the David Lynch film had a giant, telepathic worm-person in a glass tank. Will that be included in this book, because I haven't come across it so far? That, and the image of Dean Stockwell's mouth - seen far too close up - whispering "Rememberrrr the toooth" are the only two things I recall about the movie. Also Sting. This movie happened when Sting was thinking he should perhaps be an actor instead of a singer.

In case you didn't see, a new Randy the Cat comic strip went up over the weekend. The least interesting thing about cats is that they hate Mondays. Ha ha... ugh.
