Rabbits as Pets: Research Before You Adopt
posted by clake at 12:53 PM

Who's a widdle pwincess?

Anyone who is a friend of mine - either in the material world of Reality or in the more insubstantial environment of Twitter or Facebook - knows that I'm quite fond of rabbits. It really seems that a rabbit is my ideal pet. That having been said, I'm not gung-ho about encouraging rabbit ownership for everyone. It was informative to come across this article on someone's personal web site, demonstrating how someone can have a very different experience with rabbits if they aren't informed before choosing to adopt.

I went so far as to write an email to praise and support his article. It's sad to hear that what he wrote inspired such vicious hate mail from a small segment of the rabbit-loving population. I absolutely love my pet rabbit, but I nonetheless think this article serves an important purpose that I believe the less grouchy rabbit lovers of the world can get behind. That purpose is to dispel the idea (often encouraged by pet stores) that rabbits are an "easier" pet option. As his story shows, buying a rabbit is like buying a dog or a cat - it requires a lasting change of lifestyle. His pet store did him a disservice by downplaying the care of rabbits, as well as selling him a male/female pair and telling him they were two girls!

I think it's good that people making a pet decision who happen upon his article will be inspired to think twice and do further research before adopting a rabbit. They can be high maintenance and are very alien in their behaviors and needs when compared to a cat or dog. The "think twice" message of the article is a message that not enough people have impressed upon them when making this decision.

I'm glad to see that he did find a pet situation that worked better for his family. I hope he are very happy with his cats, and it's nice to hear he does have some fond memories of his bunnies despite the many unexpected surprises involved.
