Wood Shop
posted by clake at 12:08 PM

Klake recently found some plans on the internet (clicka clicka clicka) for a workbench. I had been meaning for a while to construct an affordable but sturdy bench for the garage, thus making it so that I had a nice convenient place for projects and didn't have to squat down with a 2x2 braced against the steps leading from the garage to the kitchen in order to saw wood. Also, I got tired of my garage looking like this "before"-style picture:

So I headed out to buy some supplies. First up was Ace Hardware on the Coralville strip:
  • 16 Carriage Bolts
  • 16 Nuts
  • 4 Lag Screws
  • 20 Washers
  • Elmer's Wood Glue
  • Gummi Worms
    Total: $15.77

Then Lowe's:

  • Five (5) eight-foot 2x4 studs
  • 4'x4' plywood (3/4" thick) cut in half in-store
  • 4'x4' pegboard, also cut in half
  • 43-piece peg hook kit
    Total: $51.95

Then I did all this stuff:

Klake had to make a quick run to buy a Black and Decker drill bit kit, as my own collection of bits was missing the crucial size needed for this project. I do not know what this cost. Maybe 10-15 dollars.

Then, that night, my wife went into labor and had a baby the next morning.

Comments:
Good job, Clake. Very well organized, and much cleaner than the before pic! I'm sure getting projects done is much easier and faster now. The bench looks very professional. Is it sturdy without diagonal bracing? I suppose as long as you're not doing heavy duty projects on it there wouldn't be any issues. I'll stop blabbling now.

Nice job guys. I LOVE pegboard. It is one of those cheap but rarely utilized materials that can improve organization of stuff by leaps and bounds. I don't know about you, but I find it very satisfying to organize and eliminate clutter. My quality of life is improved, I believe, and I lose things lest often.

p.s. my wedding web site is live! www.jayandkristine.org Don't look at it with Internet Explorer though. I still need to work out the IE bugs. Stupid Internet Explorer.
